Pat and Joan weren't looking for anything fancy.
They just wanted to see the beautiful scenery
and nature between San Francisco and San Diego,
and do so at a leisurely pace. Hearst Castle was
high on their list, but they were open to whatever
we suggested. They had 4 days to spend with us
as a part of a longer holiday. Both ladies were
over 65 when we traveled, and each had some health
issues to consider.
Challenges:

A two-time cancer survivor, Joan had had
a lung removed years before our trip. This
made it difficult for her to do anything
requiring any exertion. We sought out ground
floor rooms, arranged an accessible tour
at Hearst Castle (where there are quite
a few steps), and took care to make stops
where the payoff would come without much
work.
On the final day, when I joined the ladies
at Disneyland, I was able to recommend renting
a wheelchair for the day. This made a perfect
day at Disneyland possible, where it never
would have happened otherwise.

After meeting the
ladies, and spending the day with them, I
learned of Joan's serious interest in the
Monterey Pine, which is an important timber
crop in Australia. My challenge -- and I chose
to accept it -- was to find an expert in the
subject, who could discuss the tree canker
that has made the North American crop largely
unusable as timber. |
