Sample Tour: California Fishing Tour (21 Days)

Synopsis  |  Itinerary

Day 1: Arrive San Diego - Baja California Waters
You start your trip out in "America's Finest City", San Diego. Take a few hours to cool your heels after the flight, and get ready for 3 weeks of casting, trolling, reeling and hookups. The fun begins with a 3 day long range trip into the Mexican waters off Baja, California, in pursuit of a variety of big game fish. The boat sails in the evening. You'll sleep away the bulk of the night time voyage in your stateroom.
Day 2: Baja California Waters
It's time to get fishing for yellowtail, dorado (mahi-mahi), barracuda, tuna, wahoo, roosterfish and other game fish in the warm waters off Baja.
Day 3: Baja California Waters
Another day on the high seas, chasing big fish.
Day 4: San Diego - San Francisco
The boat returns to port in the late afternoon / early evening, and your flight leaves for San Francisco later in the evening. After flying to San Francisco, you settle in for the night, in preparation for a couple of days on the Bay and Sacramento River Delta ahead.
Day 5: San Francisco Bay / Sacramento River Delta
The scene today is a big change from the open expanses of ocean off the coast of Mexico. Working the cooler inland waters of the San Francisco Bay and the Sacramento River Delta in a smaller vessel, you hunt for man-sized sturgeon.
Day 6: San Francisco Bay
Back on the waters of the Bay today, with different quarry in your sights: stripers!
Day 7: San Francisco - Monterey Bay - San Francisco - Crescent City
Testing out a new sport that is gaining devoted followers, you fish the waters of the beautiful Monterey Bay from a specially outfitted single-seat kayak. It's a new spin on an old hobby, seating you closer to the water, and closer to the action. After fishing, you catch a flight to the northwestern corner of the state to fish redwood-lined rivers and coastline.
Day 8: Crescent City - Klamath River - Brookings, Oregon
Today's quarry: salmon. You hunt them while floating down the cool waters of the Klamath River, as it winds its way through forests of coastal redwood, madrone and ponderosa pine. After fishing, you take a short drive up the coast, and across the border, into the state of Oregon.
Day 9: Brookings Coastal Waters
Salmon again, but this time you're back on the Pacific, off the rocky Oregon Coast.
Day 10: Brookings Coastal Waters - Merlin, Oregon
Rock cod, ling cod and halibut thrive in the cold northern waters, and are commonly caught in shallow water. Your last day on the ocean finds you in pursuit of these species, with spinning tackle. A scenic drive over the coastal mountains brings you to the starting point for your next adventure: the wild Rogue.
Day 11: Merlin - Rogue River Wilderness
Today, you start another extended journey. This time, it's through the Rogue River wilderness. Salmon are once again on the menu, but this time the weapon of choice is a fly rod, and some hand-tieds. The evening will find you resting in the peace and quiet of a remote wilderness lodge.
Day 12: Rogue River Wilderness
More wilderness, and hopefully more fish, as you course your way down the Rogue River Valley.
Day 13: Rogue River Wilderness - Merlin - Ashland, Oregon
A final day on the Rogue, before returning to Merlin, and driving to Ashland for a relaxing evening in a town featuring some fine local brews.
Day 14: Ashland - Trinity Alps (California)
Your drive takes you back into California, and into the little-visited "God's Country" of the Trinity Alps, where you'll spend the next few days. You might cast a few leisurely plugs or plastic worms at smallmouth and largemouth bass in the evening before hitting the sack, but there's no hurry.
Day 15: Trinity Alps
Early morning on Trinity Lake, and you try your hand enticing bass from cover as the sun considers its daily ascent. Once the temperature warms up, and bass lose their appetite, you set out toward one of the many alpine lakes dotting the Trinity Alps for an evening tossing flies at pan-sized trout, and sleeping under the stars.
Day 16: Trinity Alps - McCloud
Take the hike back down at a leisurely pace, and try your hand at enticing some of the rainbows inhabiting the streams. Once you've reached "civilization" again, you have plenty of time to make the drive to McCloud, at the base of Mount Shasta.
Day 17: McCloud - Sacramento River - McCloud
Back on the water today, in search of wild rainbows on the Upper Sacramento.
Day 18: McCloud - Mt. Lassen - Lake Tahoe
A break from fishing for today's beautiful drive to Lake Tahoe. En route, you pass through Mount Lassen National Park, home of an active volcano.
Day 19: Lake Tahoe
Your final mission is to chase after the lunker Mackinaw trout (also known as lake trout) that inhabit Lake Tahoe. Tahoe is truly one of the gems of the Sierra Nevada, and you'll enjoy the beautiful setting as much as the fishing. Casino entertainment entices you on Tahoe's south shore after returning from the lake.
Day 20: Lake Tahoe - Sacramento
A final day of fishing on Tahoe before heading home. You'll drive to Sacramento at the end of the day, to catch your flight home in the morning.
Day 21: Depart Sacramento
