Part of a trio of natural wonders in the Moab, Utah
area, Canyonlands is stunning, unusual, and vast.
Here, the soft rock of the Colorado Plateau first
meets the erosive power of the Colorado (and Green)
River. The resulting erosion has created a dramatic,
sprawling landscape of buttes, mesas and canyons that
stretches over more than 500 square miles.
The part of the park that is accessible by the Island
in the Sky road is more than worth the visit. For
those with more time, and a willingness to leave the
pavement, Canyonlands has myriad opportunities well
out of sight of the road. River rafts, four wheel
drive vehicles, mountain bikes, pack animals, and
hiking boots allow visitors to escape into Canyonlands'
dreamlike wilderness, and experience a solitude found
in few places on Earth.
